What Is Outpatient Rehab?

Outpatient rehab is drug and alcohol addiction treatment that doesn’t require living at a treatment facility. Outpatient rehab programs provide group and individual behavioral therapy and medication management when needed, and they often serve as continuing care for substance use disorders after more intensive treatment.

At Palm Beach Gardens Recovery, our outpatient treatment program is the lowest level of care in our outpatient continuum, combining flexible therapy hours with continued skill building and relapse prevention as you return to everyday life. Substance use disorders remain the primary focus of care, and our outpatient rehabilitation also addresses co-occurring mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety, as part of your treatment plan.

Who Is Outpatient Rehab For?

Outpatient rehab at Palm Beach Gardens Recovery is designed for people stepping down from a higher level of care, such as partial hospitalization or an intensive outpatient program, who are ready for more independence while staying connected to treatment. A clinical intake assessment completed by our medical director and clinical director confirms that outpatient rehabilitation is the right fit, typically for clients with a stable, substance-free living environment and consistent progress in earlier treatment.

This level of care works well for people balancing work, school, or family responsibilities while continuing therapy, medication management, or MAT. If your needs change at any point, your recovery team can adjust your level of care to keep your recovery on track.

Inpatient vs Outpatient Rehab: What’s the Difference?

Addiction treatment is commonly provided in inpatient, residential, and outpatient settings. The main differences are where clients live and how much support they receive. Inpatient treatment usually takes place in a hospital or residential treatment facility with 24-hour support, which is designed for people who face more severe and unstable symptoms. In outpatient treatment, clients live at home, maintain their daily lives, and attend scheduled therapy sessions at the facility.

A review of treatment programs for substance use disorder describes standard outpatient treatment as 1 or 2 therapy sessions per week, with intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization offering more weekly hours for people who need them.

The right type of outpatient or inpatient care depends on symptom severity, home environment, and relapse risk, and many people move through more than one level. Understanding these treatment settings can make it easier to know what to expect and how the clinical assessment determines the appropriate level of care for you or a loved one.

How Does Outpatient Rehab Work?

Each client who attends outpatient rehab at Palm Beach Gardens Recovery receives an individualized treatment plan that the clinical team adjusts as their needs change. Each plan draws from evidence-based treatment options appropriate for the client’s stage of recovery.

Clients attend 1-hour daytime sessions for a total of 1 to 3 hours each week. Licensed behavioral health professionals lead each outpatient therapy session, focusing on relapse prevention, coping skills, and accountability. Depending on the treatment plan, individual and group therapy may both be part of the weekly schedule.

Medication Management

Outpatient medication management helps you stay consistent with prescribed medications as you return to daily life. Our team checks in on how your medications are working, reviews concerns as they come up, and works with your outside prescribing doctor whenever your medications need adjusting. Drug testing 3 times a week remains part of outpatient care to support accountability and help your recovery team adjust your plan when needed.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) may remain part of outpatient rehab when it supports your recovery plan. Our in-house nurse practitioner prescribes your medication, monitors how it’s working, and adjusts the dose when needed. For opioid use disorder, our nurse practitioner may prescribe Suboxone or buprenorphine, and naltrexone is an option for opioid or alcohol use depending on your diagnosis. If detox is needed before starting MAT, Palm Beach Gardens Recovery arranges detox placement first.

MAT is available throughout PHP, IOP, and outpatient rehab. Because outpatient care provides 1 to 3 hours of treatment each week in 1-hour sessions, medication appointments are incorporated into that schedule. Clients who initially require daily medication appointments are usually a better fit for IOP or PHP, where treatment is provided 5 days a week. Therapy participation and drug testing 3 times a week remain required during MAT.

How medication is discontinued depends on what has been prescribed. Suboxone and other buprenorphine-based medications are tapered gradually when clinically appropriate, while naltrexone generally does not require a taper. Insurance benefits for MAT prescriptions differ by plan, so coverage is verified before outpatient treatment begins. When included in the treatment plan, medication can help reduce cravings and support long-term recovery.

What Types of Therapy Are Offered in Outpatient Addiction Treatment?

Group therapy, individual therapy, and family therapy are the core therapies offered in outpatient addiction treatment. Outpatient clients at Palm Beach Gardens Recovery also have access to all therapies we offer, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and EMDR therapy, based on their individualized plan.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, you’ll meet one-on-one with a licensed therapist who follows your progress week to week. These sessions are where you work through setbacks, talk honestly about cravings, and keep strengthening the strategies that protect your sobriety.

Group Therapy

Group therapy connects you with people at similar stages of recovery. In each session, you’ll share experiences, hold one another accountable, and build the kind of support system that lasts beyond treatment.

Family Therapy

Family therapy helps family members understand addiction and their role as you spend more time at home and take on more independence. These sessions focus on communication, healthy boundaries, and practical support at home, so the progress you made in treatment can carry into everyday life. SAMHSA’s family therapy guide explains that this approach can improve overall functioning and help create a home environment that supports recovery.

What Are the Benefits of Outpatient Rehab?

Outpatient care lets you practice recovery in the real world while support is still in place. You can work, go to school, and care for family members while attending treatment around your schedule, then bring real situations back to therapy while they’re still fresh. Because outpatient addiction programs don’t include round-the-clock staffing, they’re also typically more affordable than inpatient rehab centers.

Outpatient addiction treatment keeps your support system active during the most vulnerable stretch of recovery: the return to everyday life. You’ll stay connected to your recovery team, continue group therapy, and have access to support groups through our aftercare program. That continuity helps the progress you made in treatment become long-term recovery.

How Effective is Outpatient Rehab?

Outpatient rehab can be effective when it matches a person’s level of need. The Surgeon General’s report on alcohol, drugs, and health found that substance use disorder treatment can produce positive outcomes across inpatient, residential, and outpatient settings. The report also notes that recurrence rates for substance use disorders are comparable to those of other chronic illnesses. For people whose home environment does not support recovery, outpatient addiction treatment may be combined with recovery-supportive housing.

Outpatient addiction treatment works best when clients stay engaged. Clients who attend consistently, rely on their support system, and follow their treatment plans are more likely to maintain their progress in recovery.
